Research in the United States has shown that most drivers travel at safe speeds and most accidents occur at speeds lower or higher then the majority travels. In addition, most speed limits are set lower than traffic engineers would recommend.

In Ontario around 60% of all tickets written are for speeding. Yet most traffic mishaps are caused by other factors such as:
  1. Failure to yield right of way.
  2. Following too close.
  3. Loss of control.
Driving slightly over the speed limit causes about one percent of accidents.
